NE Mpls Arts District
last revised Jan 19, 2010

Serving Northeast Minneapolis

We serve the community of Northeast Minneapolis (approximately 33,000 constituents) and several bordering neighborhoods. According to the Chamber of Commerce literature, the NE area—just north across the river from downtown Minneapolis—is “known for its industrial and immigrant heritage.”

The face of Northeast is changing as artists leave the gentrified Minneapolis warehouse district to purchase homes and to establish professional studios in warehouses of Northeast. The results mean that Northeast remains family-friendly while receiving revitalization through artists’ involvement.

Northeast Minneapolis Arts District
In February 2003, the city of Minneapolis designated the area of Northeast Minneapolis bordered by Broadway, Lowry, Central avenues, and the Mississippi River as the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
In 2002 the Arts Action Plan was published. The AAP—a 15-year plan with recommendations and objectives— was compiled after the completion of an extensive assessment and study of community partner needs.

Support of the Community
The Arts Action Plan was made possible with the support of a few regional agencies, and a host of individuals who share and support NEMAA’s purpose.

The planning process was funded by the McKnight Foundation, Shamrock Properties, Hillcrest Development, Wells Fargo Bank and General Mills.

The process was steered by a 49 member Technical Advisory Committee and a 27-member Steering Committee, each of which met throughout the seven-month planning period. The Minneapolis City Council is recognized for its willingness to participate in the project, and for its vision and support.
Our community partners have continued to demonstrate their support through volunteer activities, sponsorships, board members, community advisors, and continued interest and willingness to be a part of the Arts Action Plan Goals and Objectives.

The Primary Goals of the Arts Action Plan Committee is to
  1. Increase community awareness, and promote the AAP and the Northeast Arts District
  2. Promote and support live/work space for NE artists and arts organizations; and
  3. Foster an identity for the Northeast Arts District.
